The Wall of Tears is one of the remaining ruins of the penal colony that existed in Isabela between 1946 and 1958. The construction of this wall caused much suffering to the prisoners who were tortured physically and psychologically to carry the stones that form it through long distances.
The Wall of Tears is at the end of the Wetlands' trail. On the way to the wall there is a lookout with a wonderful view of Puerto Villamil where visitors can also see giant tortoises in the wild along the way.
Visitors can get to the Wall of Tears by bike or walking. The journey is approximately 7 km from Puerto Villamil. The entire journey takes about 4 hours walking and 1.5 hours by bicycle. Most visitors usually visit the Wetlands and continue to the Wall of Tears. Visitors can also take a taxi-pick-up truck to the end of Isabela beach, from where the road is only pedestrian, for a cost of USD 5.00 and continue on foot. This option shortens 2 km to the route.
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended to bring plenty of water and something to eat as there are no shops once outside Puerto Villamil. Due to the strong equatorial sun we recommend the use of sunscreen and hat. Visitors who use a bicycle should keep in mind that the road is rocky and people could fall. Finally, it is recommended to stay on the trails all the time, not to disturb or touch the animals and follow all the safety instructions along the trail.
