Tapichalaca birds reserve

ZAMORA CHINCHIPE-PALANDA

                                                The Tapichalaca Reserve ($ 20 pp, 3800 hectares) is a bird sanctuary. With at least 300 species of birds and more than 13 birds in danger of extinction. Particularly, the Jocotoco Antpitta bird was discovered in 1997 and the reserve houses the largest amount of Antpitta known in the world. In order to take care of this species, the keepers feed in the morning, giving visitors a great opportunity to observe this rare bird. To get to see this show, you have to take the first bus from Loja at 5am.
The reserve also has a great diversity of endemic plants and more than 150 species of plants in danger of extinction. Among them more than 30 orchids in danger of extinction. The reserve has trails where you can see Tapirs and other animals in its wide variety of altitudes from the 3,500 meters of subtropical forest to the cloud forest of around 1800 meters above sea level.
