CAÑAR-EL TAMBO

                                                El Tambo is one of the seven cantons of the province of Cañar. It is located on the Pan-American Highway, six kilometers from the canton Canar, at a height of 2983MSNM, its name comes from the word Quichua "tampu", which means "place of rest or Posada", site in which the Inca mail, travelers and walkers stop at the end of the day. The population is mestizo and indigenous.

Thirty minutes from El Tambo are the Inca ruins of Ingapirca, which are the most important pre-columbian ruins of Ecuador, in this canton also lies the archaeological complex of Coyoctor which is one of the most important in the province.

Another important archaeological site is the "Camino del Inca" built to unite the Tahuantinsuyo and whose remains can be found near El Tambo.
