Sierra Negra Volcano and its fumaroles, Volcán Chico and Volcán de Azufre, are some of the most visited sites in Isabela. Both Volcán Sierra Negra and Volcán Chico still have activity and visitors can see steam and gases coming out of the latter. Sierra Negra volcano is one of the largest volcanoes in the world with an crater of 7.2 x 9.4 km and its last eruption was in 2018. Together, these volcanoes offer a unique landscape that allows visitors to appreciate the volcanic origin of the Galapagos Islands.
The only way to visit the volcanoes of Isabela is through a guided tour. There are several local tourism agencies that offer tours to the volcanoes, some to the crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano, and others continue along the crater until you reach Volcán Chico. The first hike takes between 1 to 1.5 hours while the hike to Volcán Chico takes between 5 and 6 hours. Both modalities require the presence of a naturalist guide that is included in the tour price of USD 30 as well as transport and a lunch.
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended to bring plenty of water and something to eat as there are no shops once outside Puerto Villamil. Due to the strong equatorial sun we recommend the use of sunscreen and hat. Finally, it is recommended to stay on the trails all the time and follow all the safety instructions along the trail.
