It owes its name to the Tsachila community, also known as Colorados, and to the order of the Dominican Missionaries of the area who baptized him with the name of his patron. Strategically located between Quito, Guayaquil and other important cities of the coast, it is surrounded by highly productive lands.
The most striking places are located in natural areas, provided with a great biodiversity, in a variety of ecosystems that extend in an area with a high index of endemic species.
The highway Quito-Aloag-Santo Domingo is the most used to reach the capital.
From Guayaquil you go along the road that passes through Quevedo and goes north on Santo Domingo to about 3 h 30 of journey in vehicle.
Several transport cooperatives provide service to the capital of Santo Domingo from Quito and Guayaquil.
