Known as the celebrated Sumpa, a place that was the administrative and religious center of Prehispanic Cultures settled in the peninsula. It was declared "Villa" in 1824, then canton in 1839 and finally capital of the province since late 2007. Its centric hull shows a new regenerated face. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Empress, with its colonial style, draws devotees and tourists. As canton is the largest in the province, it includes beautiful beaches that extend to the north to limit with Manabi. It keeps important archaeological vestiges, like Las Vegas, a culture that is considered the oldest in South America.
From Guayaquil a first-order route connects it to Santa Elena, the approximate travel time is 1 H. From Guayaquil there are several cooperatives that leave every hour to Santa Elena.
