In the middle of the primary forest of the Cayambe-Coca ecological reserve, at 3,400 meters above sea level, is the San Marcos lagoon, which was formed by the volcanic eruption of the Cayambe.
The lake is fed by the Cuypajihua River (Quichua word meaning guinea pig and boil). In as much, that the defogues take another name. Mainly, the river Azuela is born in this place and flows into the Quijos.
Beauty and mystery surround San Marcos, especially when the mist covers part of the lake and, barely, you can see the top of the forests that surround it.
At the same time it is a magical place because you can see forms of animals in the mountains like a bear lying down. The silence allows to hear the noise of the animals and the movement of the plants, while a drizzle blankets the area.
In the place there is diversity of flora and fauna, considered unique in the country. There are 15 varieties of birds and plants in the process of extinction.
There are also countless animals such as: condors, bears, deer, goats, panthers, wolves, skunks, rabbits, to name a few.
Those who decide to go to the lake have the opportunity to camp on the shores of the lake and explore the surroundings, but with a guide. The thickness of the mountain can be a great danger.
The water temperature of this lagoon is from 0 to 12º C.
o get to the San Marcos lagoon you must travel 24 kilometers from Cayambe; Go through the communities of Olmedo, Pesillo and La Chimba until you reach the Cayambe-Coca ecological reserve. The road is in good condition and the car reaches the edge of the lagoon.
