Rucu Pichincha volcano

PICHINCHA-QUITO

                                                (4698 masl) (Rucu = Old / asleep)
It is the oldest peak in the series of peaks of the Pichincha volcano. It is the closest volcano to Quito and I could see it from several points of the city. Along with the peak of Guagua Pichincha and the peak of the enchanted Father and the peak of Rucu Pichincha are the three most representative peaks of the Pichincha volcano. Climbing the three summits is known as the integral circuit and it is possible to do it in one day.

The ascent to the volcano on a clear day offers spectacular views of the city. From the top you can see several volcanoes and snows of the country. There are also several bird species, especially hawks, curiquingue (endemic bird). The passage of the heights is marked by barns where small wolves, foxes and rabbits are common. There are also a number of endemic flowers.

Walking the trails around the volcano is free. Additionally it is not necessary to hire a guide. However, the mist may appear suddenly and make the location difficult. There are tours of the integral circuit ($ 55, 12 hours) which include transportation to / from the lodge and the tour guide. It is advisable to bring plenty of water, food, trekking shoes, sunscreen, glasses and thermal clothing as the temperature can drop a few degrees below zero in the vicinity of the summit.
