According to the Encyclopaedia of Ecuador of the historian Efrén Avilés, the island Puná, was the main settlement of the ancient culture of the Punaes, which made it wild warriors considered by the Government of Régulo Tumbala that resisted the conquest of the Incas.
The story also narrates that on the arrival of the Spaniards in 1532 commanded by Francisco Pizzarro, the island was inhabited by native Indians of the area, called Tumbes or Punáes, who spoke a differentiated language of their neighbors, which is practically undocumented so it is an unclassified language.
At the time of the Spanish conquest, in April 1531, the Battle of Puná was given, which was a clash led by Francisco Pizarro and in which the Spanish conquistadors fought with the native people of Tumbes who managed to resist the onslaught.
The island Puná, was declared protected area in 2009, since it has 5 mangroves, is a very rich area in biodiversity.
