Polylepis forest - El Angel National Park

CARCHI-ESPEJO / EL ANGEL

                                                It is a forest that occupies the buffer zone of the ecological reserve El Ángel, located northwest of the city of El Ángel. It has an extension of 12 hectares. of primary and millennial forest of Polylepis. There are approximately 40 trees in 500 m2, it is worth highlighting that it is a relic of very old forest. The polylepis reaches 15 meters high, other trees that inhabit this place reach 3 or 4 m high because this is a dominant forest so it covers with the cups existing spaces preventing the growth of other species.

The forest of Polylepis, is classified as a hierarchical forest – primary – millennial, considered unique in its genus by the exclusivity of the species, which has been developed in a glacial valley of the Quaternary Era (Pleistocene), with an age between 2 and 4 million years, is found as a dominant species in the canopy the Myrtle and understory formed by Puma Maqui , Oaks, Pandaria, Uvilla, Orchids, huicundo among others.

You can see a waterfall whose waters cross through the forest as streams. There are also seasonal ponds which are an important attraction for the development of ecotourism activities.
