The Pit Craters are two geological formations located at the highlands of santa Cruz on each side of the Puerto Ayora-Itabaca Canal road. These crater-shaped holes, of similar diameter and depth, are the product of volcanic activity in the past. Here, it is possible to admire the exuberant native vegetation and several species of birds making a short walk.
It is recommended to bring a light jacket and cap or hat since the climate in the upper part of Santa Cruz can vary from sunny to cloudy and windy. Also, the use of closed shoes is advised.
The easiest way to get to the Pit Craters is by renting a taxi-pickup truck in Puerto Ayora. This has a cost from USD 30.00 making an exclusive visit to Los Gemelos. Also, local agencies offer several types of tours that are more expensive but also include observing giant tortoises or going to the Santa Cruz's tunnels.
