Mangrove Reserve Mataje-Cayapas, Esmeraldas
The Reserve 'Manglares Mataje-Cayapas' contains the highest mangrove forest in the world. Here the mangroves grow up to 70 meters high which makes it a strategic point for bird migration during june and july. The biodiversity in can be appreciated by boat excursions and walks through the trails and beaches. The town of 'San Lorenzo' is located in the middle of the park and is a good starting point to explore the area. Other nearby comunities are 'La Tola' and 'Olmedo', which you can access by speedboat.
To visit the mangrove forest it is necessary to book a speedboat private tour. It is recommended to contact the Cooperative 'San Lorenzo del Pailon'.
The company 'Trans Esmeraldas' offer regular services Quito-San Lorenzo via Ibarra.
They also cover the route San Loranzo-Esmeraldas. From Esmeraldas you can reach any main city in the country through bus services (Manta, Santo Domingo, Guayaquil, etc)
