The reserve protects the humid forests and dry forests that surround and cover the Chindul Mache mountain range on the Ecuadorian coast. The humid forests belong to Chocó, a very humid region that extends from Panama to the northwest of Ecuador. The dry forests replace the humid forests to the south, from the environs of Cojimíes and JAMA, in the north of Manabí; They cover the Cordillera de mache Chindul and the coastal strip of the Ecuadorian south and arrive to northern Peru. The reserve protects the Laguna de Cube, an area that in the 2001 was declared a wetland of international importance, both for the biodiversity that is found there and for the important ecological functions it fulfils and the environmental services it provides to the neighboring populations.
