Macas is the place to book tours into the southern amazon. From here it is possible to visit Shuar communities. Also 80% of the Sangay National Park is located inside the Province of Morona Santiago, whose capital is Macas.
The touristic passage on the Domingo Jumin offers traditional food and local handicrafts. The beach of the Upano river is a beloved place by locals and rafting fans.
The cuisine of the area is based on the Shuar diet. Traditionally consisting of wild meat: paca, agouti or fish. The "ayampaco" is a traditional dish of steamed chicken covered with jungle herbs. The traditional beverage is the "chicha", made of cassava (yuca/manioc), plantain or chonta.
By car:
From Quito, take the panamerican highway to the south until Ambato. From Ambato you will have two possibilities: a) going through Baños, Puyo, Meram Palora and Macas (350 km, 6h); or b) through Riobamba, Cabadas, Zuñac, Macas (368 km, 5h46min)
By Bus:
From Riobamba there are several cooperatives: Riobamba, Mushug Yuyay, Cebadas, Sangay and Unidos.
Buses are available as well from Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Sucúa and Puyo.
