SUCUMBIOS-SHUSHUFINDI

Located on the north bank of the Napo River, between the Coca and Aguarico rivers; Is characterized mainly by the presence of flooded lowlands and marshes. It is one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, but its wildlife is permanently threatened by growing oil activity. Scientific studies have identified more than 450 species of birds in the area. Special trees such as giant ceiba trees, cedars, laurels, rafts, and pambiles are common here. In the Reserve is also the lagoon Limoncocha, famous for being an excellent point of observation of birds.

Near the shores of the lagoon live indigenous Quichua families. They carry out subsistence crops alongside commercial crops. Oil activity during the 1980s and 1990s has negatively impacted the region and its inhabitants, which is why the community is very open to ecotourism and other alternative uses of its fragile ecosystem.
