Its name is given of a stream that is within the area, it has become a refuge for the flora and fauna of the sector. The main attraction of the area is the tropical humid forest of the Chocó region, an ecosystem with great biodiversity.
This refuge was established in the area where the forest station "La Chiquita" was operated, a site destined to the research and study of management of forest species typical of the tropical forests of the northwest of Ecuador.
From Quito: The fastest way to enter the area is to reach the city of Ibarra and from there take the road Ibarra-San Lorenzo (165 km) until you reach the "Y" (11 km before arriving to San Lorenzo) where you will find the entrance to the refuge. From San Lorenzo (Esmeraldas). From the city of San Lorenzo you can access this refuge using the road that goes to the town of Ricaurte (via San Lorenzo – Parroquia Ricaurte); At kilometer 11, where the "Y" enters the Ricaurte parish, you will find the entrance to the refuge.
