(Free, 296 archeological pieces, Jama – Coaque culture 355 BC – 1532 AC)
Jama archeological museum shows an incredible collection of pieces from Jama – Coaque culture with some pieces with more than 2000 years old. In the exhibition, you can see the social, political and religious organization of Jama – Coaque culture. There are pieces which represents “Shamanes”= doctors, priests and “Caciques”= leaders of the culture. Additionally, there are figures of animals, seals and masculine and feminine representations. The museum have models of the social life, temples and habitants (fisherman, textile, warriors). There are some pieces of Valdivia culture (3500B.C – 1800 BC) and Chorrera (1030 BC-750 BC) which inhabited the zone. The entrance is free.
The museum was destroyed in the earthquake on 16 April 2016. However, the museum was reconstructed and after a long restoration, the museum was reopen on September 2018.
The museum is located in Jama city in streets “Bernardo Espinar y Leandro Medina”. The museum is 1.2Km from Jama entrance (howler monkey sculpture). You can take a taxi or tuk-tuk ($1.5, 6 min, 15 walking).
In order to reach Jama you can take a bus either way “Bahía de Caráquez” to “Pedernales”.
