The Wetlands of Isabela comprise a series of freshwater lagoons sea inlets located on the south coast of Isabela next to Puerto Villamil. These Wetlands are home to a myriad of species such as giant tortoises, seabirds (blue footed boobies, pelicans and frigates), finches, sea lions and marine iguanas, as well as several species of mangrove and other endemic plants. The importance of this marine-coastal ecosystem led to its being declared a protected site in 2002 under the RAMSAR Convention.
Visitors can wonder through the Wetlands of Isabela by walking or cycling. Once visitors reach the west end of the beach in Puerto Villamil there is a path for pedestrians and cyclists that leads to all the places of Isabela's Wetlands. The walk covers approximately 12 km. And it can take a whole day if visitors wish to cover all the trails and viewpoints of the route. Some of the main sites include La Playa del Amor and El Estero. These two can be covered in one morning or afternoon.
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended to bring some food as there are no shops outside of Puerto Villamil. Due to the strong equatorial sun it is advised to use sunscreen, wear a cap or hat and bring water to hydrate. If visitors prefer to use the bicycle, the journey becomes much shorter, but bear in mind that the terrain is rocky and the vegetation is thorny to avoid accidents.
