How to climb Cotopaxi volcano?

COTOPAXI-LATACUNGA

                                                (Cotopaxi Summit 5897 masl)
Reaching the summit of the majestic Cotopaxi volcano is one of the biggest challenges in your life. To achieve this, adaptation to height, good physical condition and self-determination are necessary.

First of all is height adaptation. Each person reacts differently to height. Thus, at a higher height there is lower atmospheric pressure. This makes your body makes an extra effort to capture the oxygen it needs. Common ravages are: headache, upset stomach, dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting. The only way to know how your body will react is to climb smaller mountains before making the Cotopaxi ascent. Many mountain climbers recommend making some 4 previous summits such as: Ilaló - Ruco Pichincha - Corazon - Iliniza Norte - Imbabura. After these you will know how your body reacts and you will also be height adapted to reach the magnificent Cotopaxi.

The second is a good physical condition. Training beforehand with cardio sports will ensure that your body resists wear and tear. Imagine that the higher your body is the extra physical effort you will need. At 6000 meters your body reacts as if you were jogging, palpitations rise, you feel tired, etc. That is why it is advised to maintain a good physical condition and leave the vices at least a few months before the attempt.

Finally, as in everything, your attitude will determine the success of the mission. You must walk 5 to 7 hours at night in ice, with cliffs on the sides, tied to two people that you will have to trust them, cold below zero, there may be strong winds and snow (the good thing is that it does not rain on the mountain). Maintain a constant pace, the experience and professionalism of the guide will facilitate your predetermination to conquer the top. Be sure to hire a qualified guide such as an ASEGUIM guide.

Reaching the top is one of the most rewarding sensations. If the mountain allows it, you will appreciate a 360 degree view of mountains around you. A spectacular crater will greet you, a sulfur smell with small smokers. Finally, peace and silence will touch your soul, with the satisfaction of duty accomplished, you will reach glory.

WHAT TO BRING:
High mountain agencies usually provide or rent the necessary equipment: three layers of clothing (thermal, insulating and waterproof), high mountain boots, crampons, ice ax, headlamp with extra batteries, thermal glove and waterproof glove, leggings, helmet, thermal hat and scarf, sunglasses for the descent, 2 liters of water, hot water, snacks (sweets for extra energy) and a 40l backpack. Normally the guide takes the rope and carabiners for the rope.

WHAT TO DO PRIOR:
Eat healthy food that lasts a short time in your stomach (nothing heavy). Hydrate yourself very well the last week before climbing. Avoid red meat, alcohol and smoking.

WHEN TO GO:
The best time is between November and March, which is the rainy and cold season. But calm down, on the mountain it does not rain and the cold will help the ice to be stronger reducing risk to fall and avalanches.
