Haven of peace - Floreana island Galapagos

GALAPAGOS

The Haven of Peace is a natural rock formation that was modified by man. Originally these caves were used as a refuge by pirates and whalers who passed through the island to stock up on fresh water and giant tortoises for their meat. Gradually the caves and some rocks were carved by the navigators.
Today at the base of the hill there is a semi-natural giant tortoises breeding center. This means that the giant tortoises are fed at certain points and times but these can wonder the land at will as there are no enclosures.
