The first building of the mercy Order was located in what was the Church of La Concepción, on the grounds of the current firefighter's museum. The second building, in the present Víctor Manuel Rendón (although it was several times built by the fires) and the third, in what was known as the Chapel of the shipyard (present Church of San Alejo), located in the Avenue Eloy Alfaro and Street Luzarraga.
To visit the minor Basilica of La Merced, is to feel seized with a great aesthetic emotion. Walking under its pointed arches is to go back to the beautiful times of the Gothic style, with which the beautiful cathedrals of the Middle Ages were built. In the left nave the visitor finds a painting painted around 1800, or perhaps at the end of the decade of 1790. It is the image of the Virgin, and at her side, a young woman who touches the fringe of her garments. That young woman who posed for the painting was called Rosa Icaza and Silva, and with the walk of Time, became the wife of the hero and poet José Joaquín de Olmedo.
