The zoo opened its doors to the public officially on July 25, 2002 under the direction of Nelson Chiriboga, but its antecedents date back to the years 80, after recruiting wounded birds without possibility of being returned to its natural habitat, wild pets abandoned by its owners and mainly animals of other zoos that closed its doors. Then, 10 years later it was constituted in a center of rescue of Wildlife backed by then Inefan (today Ministry of the Environment) thus increasing the number of copies added by the confiscations of the National Police (today U.P.MA.). It was then that the need arose to find a way to finance its food and stay, opening it to the public. The site also serves the country as a tourist, ecological and educational place where you will find most of the native flora and fauna of Ecuador.
In the conservation field, the zoo works both in rescue and in rehabilitation and protection of approximately 60 endangered species.
