Grotto of Peace - San Gabriel
Nature and Faith were the architects of the Grotto of Peace, a shrine of the Virgin Mary nestled in an impressive cavern in the river Canyon. The force of the water was filtered by an arm of the mountain and there opened a stage full of stalactites, among which small birds and bats nest.
Without a doubt, this wonderful place is one of the most representative sites of the Montúfar canton. It is located 26 km from San Gabriel and has become the most visited site by national and foreign tourists.
The tradition tells that, at the beginning of the century, Father Jaramillo, Pastor of Peace, dreamt that the Virgin asked for an image to appease the political problems of the time. That is why the artist Imbabura Daniel Reyes was ordered to take a stone from the river to conceive Mary.
By car, 8 km south of San Gabriel, from the city of La Paz, 15 min descends on a paved road to a deep valley.
