The National Recreation Area Lake Park, is part of the national system of protected areas of Ecuador. It was created on November 15th, 2002 and has an extension of 2,283 hectares. The lake was created as a product of the dam that dams the waters of the rivers Chongon and lost, as part of the civil work of the water transfer from the Guayas River to the peninsula of Santa Elena.
It is a natural reserve declared as protected in 2003 by the Ministry of Environment, which offers different options of ecotourism. As a recreational space, it combines nature with sporting activities. The most striking are the green areas that can be made from picnics to group barbecues. There are also volleyball courts and bike for rollerblading or cycling. As for nature, there are 40,600 hectares between the lake, the scrub and the tropical dry forest, in which more than 160 birds inhabit.
The vegetation is characterized by the form of dry scrubland of lowlands, deciduous forests and semideciduous of lowlands; And very dry tropical and tropical dry forest. Among its species is: yellow trees, native balsam, native Colorado, native script, black wood, beauty, native Guadua cane, Pigio, ebony, zapote of dog, Plum, Guayacán, Sweet Earth Thorn, Carob, Pechiche.
There are 160 species of birds, as well as mammals. Among the birds, the most common are the parakeets, the Swallows, frigates, white Heron, osprey, kingfisher, pelicans and the native Guayaquil Carpenter Parakeet. Among the mammals, there are, white-tailed deer, Peccary, Yaguarundí, Anteater, armadillos, puma endemic, raccoon crab, head of mate, bats of several species and the traditional Savannah squirrel of Guayaquil. Inside the amphibians and reptiles are the toad, Lizard, Green Iguana, Boa Common, Equis. Among the tilapia fish, old blue, small mouth, dica, freshwater lobster, clam, snail, small star.
From Guayaquil: The entrance to the area is located at km 26 of the Guayaquil-Salinas Highway, two kilometres after the toll. The tour takes 35 minutes by car and an hour in an urban bus. There are also second order roads that are difficult to access in the rainy season, such as via Casas Viejas (km 22), La Cienega-Aguas Negras and the route that joins the Strawberry and La Teresita (km 30 of the Guayaquil-Salinas Road).
