El Junco lagoon - turtle breeding center - Puerto Chino beach
GALAPAGOS-SAN CRISTOBAL
El Junco Lagoon is located in the high lands of San Cristobal Island and is the only freshwater lagoon in the Galapagos Islands. This lagoon is characterized by its scenic beauty and by the panoramic view of almost the entire island, which can be appreciated on days of clear sky. In addition to El Junco Lagoon, it is possible to visit The Galapaguera, which is the breeding center for giant tortoises. After El Junco Lagoon, continuing along the same road, there is Puerto Chino Beach. This beautiful white sand beach is ideal for enjoying the sun and waves.
These sites can be visited together by a daily tour, or separately. If you want to visit them separately it is recommended arrange the transport service with the taxis in Puerto Bauqerizo Moreno.
It is recommended to bring a light jacket and cap or hat since the climate in the upper part of San Cristobal can vary from sunny to cloudy and windy. Also, the use of closed shoes and long pants is advised.
One of the ways to visit El Junco Lagoon is to hire a tour at a local travel agency. The tour includes transportation, food and naturalist guide to visit Laguna El Junco and the Galapaguera. In addition, some tour modalities include a visit to Puerto Chino Beach.
Another way to visit Laguna El Junco is to rent a taxi from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The taxi driver waits and accompanies the visitor at each chosen visit site.
Depending on the physical condition of the visitor, you can also visit the Laguna El Junco by bicycle (18 km). However, this route requires pedaling uphill until reaching the rural parish of El Progreso. After this point, the route is mainly flat. For this reason, many visitors choose to take a taxi to El Progreso and from there they continue cycling. Another way is to reach the Laguna El Junco, then visit the Galapaguera and return by taxi from
there. Finally, a person in good physical condition can visit the Laguna El Junco, the Galapaguera and continue downhill to the beach of Puerto Chino (37 km). It is recommended to return by taxi from Puerto Chino since the majority of the return is uphill.
