The El Chato Reserve is a destination of incomparable beauty where it is possible to appreciate the emblematic giant tortoises or Galapagos in wild state from up close. El Chato is located within unaltered private properties, or also called farms or ranches, in the rural parish of Santa Rosa in the highlands of Santa Cruz. There are 4 authorized farms to receive visitors: Manzanillos, Mariposas, Primicias and El Chato 2. These farms can be visited hiring a tour at local agencies in Puerto Ayora.
It is recommended to wear a cap or hat and wear a light jacket since the weather in the highlands can vary from sunny to rainy and windy. In addition, it is preferable to wear closed shoes and long pants.
To get to these farms it is necessary to hire a tour in one of the local tourism agencies in Puerto Ayora. The tour generally includes transportation, entrance fees to the farms, refreshments and the company of a naturalist guide.
Also, you can visit these four farms individually. In this case, it is recommended to hire a taxi-pickup truck in Puerto Ayora and a naturalist guide. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes from Puerto Ayora.
