Santuario del Señor de la Divina Misericordia is the second largest temple in Guayaquil, after the St. Peter Apostle Cathedral and has a capacity for 2,300 people. Its history began in June of 2009, when in the church Cathedral St. Peter Apostle, was realized the unveiling of an altar of the Lord of Divine Mercy, which had a massive turnout, which showed the large number of devotees in this city. Therefore, Archbishop Guayaquil, Monsignor Antonio Arregui, asked the Association of Divine Mercy to build a sanctuary in our city.
Thus, on September 26, 2009, the first stone of this project was put, built by the architect Eduardo Romero in phases. On June 26, 2011, the first part consisted of the first dome and the altar. In May of 2012 the second part (the second dome) was inaugurated and in July of the 2013, it was finished with the third stage. The work, made with the contribution of businessmen and faithful of the city, has an area of 110,000 square meters, also includes a house of retirement, recreational areas, house for priests, area for catechesis and evangelization, Space for 2000 Michos, and a park for 120 vehicles. The sanctuary measures 29 meters high and has capacity for 2,200 people seated in 248 seats.
Parallel to its construction, on Sunday, the preaching was carried out in the shrine's premises, which began in a small hut, with about 20 people and which eventually reached between 500 and 600 parishioners, who participated in the mass offered by the priest Alfredo García.
The sanctuary, surrounded by extensive vegetation, and a lake, which gives it a natural beauty, is characterized by its imposing architectural structure. From the entrance there is a large pointed arch that shelters the central nave (1790 square meters as well as the sacristy and the crypt (118 m²).
It also has a marble altar and a one-piece stained glass from the Ecuadorian artist, Jorge Luis Narea, which is an art in glasses measuring 288 square meters and has the image of the Lord of Divine Mercy, decorated with colorful colors. There is also a grotto dedicated to the Virgin of Medjugorje.
