PICHINCHA-P. MONCAYO-TABACUNDO

The Cochasquí pyramids are considered an important natural and archaeological heritage of the northeast of Pichincha. The Cochasquí Archaeological and Scientific Research Park extends over an area of 84 hectares, at 3,100 meters above sea level, allowing for this privileged location a visibility of 240 ° from where you can see elevations, mountains and valleys such as: Pambamarca, Pichincha , Puntas Hill, Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Ilinisas, El Quinche, Los Chillos, San Antonio de Pichincha and others.

The Cochasquí archaeological complex consists of quadrangular tolas or truncated pyramids. Of the fifteen pyramids, nine of them have ramps, and six do not. In the area there have also been found 21 burial mounds or circular tolas. In addition to the findings in situ, it has archaeological museums, two ethnographic museums, an ethno-botanical garden and a didactic museum of musical instruments, weapons and game elements.

Among the studies conducted, there are three theories about the functionality of the Cochasquí pyramids. The German archaeologist Max Uhle considered the pyramids as ceremonial-ritual sites since 556 skulls were found in one of them. On the other hand, Udo Oberem and the 'Ecuador Group', made up of German scientists from the University of Bonn, carried out studies and excavations in several sites in Cochasquí, both in the pyramids and in the burial mounds. Within their report they say that Cochasquí is a residential site without ruling out the ceremonial-ritual. It has also been considered as a space for possible astronomical observation from which stars and constellations can be visualized, as well as astronomical phenomena that influence the agricultural calendar.

For your stay it is recommended that you do it in one of the nearby cities, such as Ibarra or Otavalo. Another option for which you can choose is to camp in the Archaeological Park communicating previously to the contact telephone.
