Fertile area bathed by the river Chota, in one of the lowest lands in the province that benefits from a warm-dry climate. The tranquillity of the area and its pleasant climate have made it an ideal place to relax and unwind from everyday life.
In these lands is one of the few Afro strongholds, descendants of African blacks brought by the Spaniards to perform harder jobs in the mines, especially sugar cane crops and trapiches, replacing Indians who had been affected by the epidemics. Much of the surnames of the Ecuadorian people of this area are the name of the city that their ancestors inhabited in Africa.
The juncal, the population with the largest presence of the black race, is a cheerful village, from its valley have been a good number of players of the Ecuadorian football team. In Carpuela and mask, populated of the valley, one of the most famous handicrafts of the area is made, the masks of mud with afro traits, main means of subsistence, industry that has prospered and that even of sells abroad.
