Choco tropical forest - Esmeraldas

ESMERALDAS-SAN LORENZO

                                                It is located between the provinces of Esmeraldas and Carchi, it has the notoriety to show unique characteristics to be influenced by the coastal air currents and for being one of the extensions of the Colombian Chocó forest that characterized by presenting a high endemism both animal and vegetal.

The territory of the ethnic Awá is located in the Chocó region, is inhabited mainly by three ethnic groups all distributed in 18 communities that form the Federation of Awá Communities of Ecuador.

The area is characterized by its high biodiversity, endemism and natural beauty where the exploitation of wood advances, so it has been classified as one of the most biodiverse and threatened areas of the world, because of the high risks to its natural resources.

This forest covered in the past some 80 000 square kilometers of lowlands of the west, but of this cover is little less than 6%, so it is the most devastated region of Ecuador.
