The first foundation of Loja was in 1546 in the current Catamayo. Two years later, the city of Loja was founded in its current location. In Catamayo you will find the nearest airport to Loja, the "La Toma" airport, 30 km from Loja. In the surroundings of Catamayo is the most fertile valley of the province with large plantations of sugarcane.
From Catamayo you can go to the famous community of Cisne, place of pilgrimage in veneration to the Virgin of the Swan. To do this, you have to go 15km to the west towards the community of San Pedro de la Bendita and take the 22Km road to El Cisne.
