Cajas National Park Ecuador

AZUAY-CUENCA

Cajas National Park is located in the province of Azuay, in the south of Ecuador, where the Andes mountain range is older, with less volcanic activity and without the high peaks that are so common to the north. In this area, the Cordillera forms vast plateaus of great beauty where water accumulates in large quantities.

The boxes are filled with bodies of water: about 165 lagoons have been counted with more than 1 hectare of surface and 621 with less than 1 hectare; They are in total 786 bodies of water. Surely the condors who visit it can appreciate its true form from the air: a green and golden rug, very wrinkled and where each valley keeps Lagunitas connected by small streams. Due to the large number of lagoons, the presence of migratory birds and the importance it has for the capture, storage and provision of water for nearby populations, it was recognized as a Ramsar site or wetland of international importance. Since the year 2002, and through an agreement signed with the Ministry of the Environment, the Cajas National Park is administered by the municipality of Cuenca.

There are many tourist attractions like: Valley and Lagoon of Llaviucu, Laguna Toreadora, Laguna Illincocha, Laguna de Lagartococha, Loma de Tres Cruces, Laguna Taitachungo, Sector of buries, sector of windows, walks, Virgen of the boxes, walls, lagoons of enchanted beaches
