Atacames is a bathing beach very popular in Ecuador. Here you can chill at the beach or enjoy in pubs and clubs. You can also practice aquatic and extreme sports.
The cuisine is one of the main attractions, you can try specialties including 'Ceviche'(seafood cold soup served with plantain chips, roasted corn or pop corn), 'Cazuela' (plantain based soup with lots of peanut sauce), 'Caldo de bolas' (soup of plantain balls stuffed with veggies and meat), 'Tapao' (mashed plantain), 'Bolon de Verde' (fried plantain balls stuffed with cheese served with coffee) and many others.
The fisherman of the village offer coastal tours and visits to the bird island (20-30 USD pp). There are also fishing tours.
It is recommended not to go to the beach at night.
Several bus companies cover the route Quito-Atacames, either through Ibarra or Santo Domingo. The starting point from Quito is the South Bus Terminal in Quitumbe. From Guayaquil it is also possible to reach Atacames. Services are regular.
