This reserve is located in the province of El Oro, in the southwest of Ecuador, very close to the border with Peru. It is characterized by protecting dry ecosystems that include forests and scrubs. It also protects mangrove forests.
Endemism levels are as impressive as their biodiversity: there are many species that are found only in the equatorial dry forests of southern Ecuador and northern Peru.
In the past, the area was a reserve for military practices, but given the importance of dry and semi-arid environments it was declared as an ecological reserve in order to preserve these ecosystems in perpetuity.
